Ways to volunteer with the Huntsville Inner City Learning Center

Homework and Tutoring

We need tutors at the center to coach our students and help them to complete  their homework Monday-Thursday between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Please contact Susan if you are interested in tutoring.  We need you!

Bible Study

We provide our students with a daily devotional and they are encouraged to develop a personal relationship with God. We welcome guest Bible teachers and volunteers to share their faith and who would like students to visit their place of worship.

Provide a Meal

We feed the students a hot, nutritious meal each day they are at the center (Monday-Thursday). If you work with a group that loves to cook, this is a great way to get involved. We love to have businesses and church groups join us for mealtimes.

Guidelines: Please prepare or provide family-friendly food for 65 children, and deliver by 3:30 on your chosen day (if you need to deliver it earlier, please let us know and we will make arrangements). You can do this alone, or if you prefer, we welcome small groups to provide this service.

The kids love a variety of dishes, like pastas, casseroles, soups, tacos, chicken, hamburgers, etc.

Transportation: After School Program

Monday through Thursday HICLC buses to pick up children from several schools between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. We have an urgent need for volunteers in this role.

Mentoring

All volunteers are invited to become personal mentors to the students. We welcome tutors and volunteers to join us at meal time at 4:30 each day, which is a great opportunity to learn more about the students. We frequently have field trips or weekend events that require chaperones, which is open to anyone and another great mentoring time.

Health & Fitness

The students participate in physical exercise each day they are at the center. Mondays and Thursdays they cross-train at the center or go for a supervised through Butler Terrace. On Tuesdays students receive lessons in wellness and mindful decisions to build a healthy and rewarding life. Wednesdays the children participate in different enrichment classes. We welcome you to join us and if you have an exercise that you are passionate about we would love to talk to you about it and welcome you to come teach a class!

Gardening

Gardening is a beautiful way to teach our students about God’s glory through creation. This hands-on activity offers the opportunity to reap the rewards of hard work and a good work ethic, and also teaches the importance of giving back and sharing with others in their community. We need help with gardening maintenance throughout the year.

"My experience as a tutor at the Huntsville Inner City Learning Center has blessed me with the opportunity to not only spend one on one time with the children but also a chance to build relationships. To grow close to a child and then witness the pride they feel when they succeed at correctly spelling a list of words, finally understanding a math problem or better yet, being able to read after trying so hard is one of the many benefits of being a volunteer at the Learning Center."

Judy Panucci

"As an exercise volunteer, you have the privilege of running, walking, and doing calisthenics alongside the children, encouraging them to do their best and to work toward the goal of finishing a 5k.   There are many rewards along the way but the ultimate is to see the smiles when they cross the finish line!"

Carol May

"Being an exercise volunteer is a way I can encourage the children with what I enjoy doing ... running! I am in no way an exercise professional, just a pursuer of fitness. This is a way I am able to serve the Lord through serving HIS children."

Beth Mosier

"It is certainly fun to be around all the energy, neat to see the smiles and laughter of the kids, great to watch the youthful competitive spirit, very special to see them encourage each other, but the most rewarding is to witness the moment they realize they are able to do more or run faster or longer than they thought possible – “..more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us” (Eph 3:20)"
